# US fatal crash rates per mile by gender, 2022

Each row pairs drivers in US fatal crashes with the miles that group drove, for one sex and age band in 2022. Crashes come from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), miles from the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). ## Coverage - **Window:** calendar year 2022, the most recent year both the crash census and a national travel survey cover. Dates are UTC. - **Grain:** one row per sur…

US fatal crash rates per mile by gender, 2022 is an open, machine-readable dataset published on Mostly Right as immutable Parquet versions, with a documented column schema, a JSON query API and a direct download. Its first rows are free to read and it is open to AI agents.

- Tables: 1
- Formats: Apache Parquet (download), JSON (query and sample)
- Cost: the first 500 rows of each table are free to everyone; querying and downloading need a free account and count against a monthly free allowance unless the workspace is subscribed

- Topics: road safety, driver gender, vehicle miles travelled, fars, national household travel survey, united states

## How to use it

1. Read a table's schema — no account needed.
2. Fetch its published sample rows — no account needed.
The first 500 rows of every table, in stored order, are free to everyone, with or without an account. Without an account you get that sample and nothing else: no filter, sort, search, download or page past row 500.
3. Sign in at https://mostlyright.md/login, connect this dataset to a workspace on its page, and create an `mr_use_` key.
4. Query bounded JSON, or download the complete Parquet snapshot and read it locally.
A free workspace may read 100,000 rows and run 1,000 queries a UTC month past the sample. The allowance is shared by everyone in the workspace, and a free workspace may have any number of members. Reads count against the workspace whose data or key they use. A subscribed workspace is never counted, for anyone working in it.

Agents can do all of this over MCP at `https://mostlyright.md/api/mcp` — searching, reading schemas and sampling rows work with no credential at all.

### Columns (9)

| Column | Type | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `survey_year` | integer | The year the travel survey ran and the crash file covers. 2022 is the most recent year both exist for. |
| `sex` | string | The driver's sex as each source recorded it: male, female, unknown, or the all drivers roll-up. |
| `age_group` | string | The driver's age band, or the all ages roll-up. |
| `drivers_in_fatal_crashes` | integer | Drivers of a motor vehicle in transport who were involved in a fatal crash that year. A count of everyone, not a sample. |
| `annual_vmt_miles` | decimal | Vehicle miles this group drove in the year, estimated by weighting each surveyed trip to a year of national travel. |
| `trips_sampled` | integer | How many surveyed trips the mileage estimate rests on. A small number means a thin estimate. |
| `vmt_share` | decimal | This group's share of all miles driven in the survey year, between 0 and 1. Multiply it by any national mileage total to rescale the rate. |
| `fatal_involvements_per_100m_vmt` | decimal | Drivers involved in fatal crashes per 100 million vehicle miles this group drove. Empty where a rate would not be meaningful; rate_note says why. |
| `rate_note` | string | Empty when the rate is published, otherwise the reason it was withheld. |

## Citing this dataset

Cite the dataset by name and canonical URL (https://mostlyright.md/datasets/us-fatal-crash-rates-per-mile-by-gender-2022), the table, and the immutable `version_id` the rows came from. A query response carries `table.version_id` and `table.content_digest`; a download carries a strong ETag and a `Content-Digest` header.
